Polarisation Dependent Spectroscopy and Microscopy with Sub Picoseconds Time Resolution

The new approach uses the high extinction ratio of the Glan Polarizer combined with low dispersion to gain a sub picoseconds resolution. This is reached by special polarizer’s and the geometry of the setup, using a Kerr switch. Variations of the optical assembly allow the use as a microscope.

Terabit Optical Burst Sampling – Method and Design for Single-shot Optical Sampling

The invention allows single-shot laser pulse characterization with a time resolution in the THz regime. It consists of a laser system that provides the sampling pulse, an optical element (e.g. non-linear crystal) which generates the measuring signal through superposition of the sampling pulse and the measuring pulse, and a third element for the detection.

    Real-Time Approaches for Video-Genre-Classification

The present technology is interesting in connection with personal video recorder and for the automatic classification of audio-visual data for Internet and search engines. The great challenge in the field of multimedia content analysis is the transformation of human interpretations of audio-visual data to the respective machine processable representation.

Generation of Entangled Photons by Quantum Dots Growing on a (1,1,1)-Substrate

This invention offers a minimization of the fine structure splitting (FSS) in Quantum Dots (QD) using (1,1,1)-orientated substrates. Due to this method it is possible to produce compact sources of entangled photon pairs with high repitition rates. The (1,1,1)-substrate ensures a C3v-symmetry of the quantum-mechanical confinementpotential of the QD, which results in a FSS equal zero.

    Catalytic Nano-Pen for Cutting Graphenes

We provide a novel method for high speed trench channeling of mono- and multilayer graphene using silver nanoparticles in an ambient environment and at elevated temperatures. A silver nanoparticle located at a graphene edge catalyzes oxidation of neighboring carbon atoms, thereby burning a trench into the graphene layer. The novel method allows the cutting of smooth trenches (peakto- peak roughness below 2 nm) with speeds up to 250 nm/s, whereby channeling speed increases with particle size. Thus, similar trenches may be cut in graphene at elevated temperatures using a scanning probe tip made of a catalytic material.
