Ecxlusive licensing agreement between mivenion and ipal - FU invention licensed to Berlin pharma company

17.12.2008 mivenion GmbH and IPAL today announced that they have entered an exclusive licensing agreement for the world-wide development and commercialization of drugs derived out of bioactive polymers that enable discovery and development of targeted diagnostics and therapeutics for inflammation and autoimmune disorders. The core technology was developed by the research group of Prof. Dr. Rainer Haag at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin and Dr. Jens Dernedde, Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiochemistry at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Based on a strong expertise in targeted diagnostic and therapeutic effector molecules, mivenion will generate various drug lead candidates in different clinical indications.Under the agreement, mivenion licenses the intellectual property from IPAL in return for milestone and royalty payments. mivenion has the right to identify promising candidates and bring them into clinical trials in medical areas defined by mivenion. The drug structures can be synthetically modified in broad flexibility yielding new conjugate entities with different therapeutic or diagnostic properties.

The outstanding quality of this type of drugs is their multivalent mode of action, the simple and fully synthetic accessibility and excellent tolerability in vivo said Michael Schirner, managing director of mivenion, With promising efficacy data, we hope to attract interested partners to join us towards commercialization. First data on optimized lead candidates in reliable preclinical models imply a great potential of this new drug technology. We will now direct further development into clinical indications with relevant medical needs.

We are delighted to have this license agreement in place. mivenion has exceptional expertise in pharma R&D. With this collaboration, we can accelerate the development of our technology and expand its use into a broad range of clinical applications stated Rafaela Kunz, life science project manager at ipal GmbH. Along with this exclusive licensing  agreement a scientific collaboration including the further development of bioactive polymers was completed. We look forward to a valuable partnership with mivenion which will strengthen the conjunction between scientific research and commercial success in the health care market.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Haag added: We are pleased to have mivenion as a partner in advancing our multivalent nanomedicine. mivenion is pioneering a new combination of our bioactive macromolecules with diagnostic and therapeutic applications which will enable them to develop novel drugs for a broad range of diseases. Prof. Dr. Haag is the spokesman of the new collaborative research center (SFB 765) Multivalenz, which was established in 2008 by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and head of the Dendritic Polymer Research Group at the FU Berlin. In his group the development of new concepts for anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agents play a central role. Recently, the FU also filed an application for the establishment of a Berlin Cluster in Nanomedicine.
